Chapter Thirteen:
The Stained Rose
âIf everyone is thinking alike, someone isnât thinking.â
General George Patton
âWhat the hell are you doing?!â Ezio berated Armando, more from shock than actual anger as he abandoned the cover of the vehicle.
âSaving your life.â Armando moved closer to the surrendered guard as he gestured for him to turn around.
Yet Ezio noticed that the guard still clung to his rifle, staring back at Armando with such a look as if to indicate he meant to die in battle.
âDonât make me kill you!â Armando aimed at the guardâs head.
âYouâre going to have to kill me no matter what.â The guard glanced between Ezio, Armando, Mario, and the other tied-up border guard.
âHeâs right,â Mario interjected. âShoot him now. Itâll be quicker for everyone.â
âIâm not going to shoot him!â Armando griped before asking the guard, âWhatâs your name?â
âMatteo,â the guard replied quickly.
âHow do you feel about the Fascists, Matteo?â Armando asked, and Ezio offered him a surprised glance.
âAre you a revolutionary?â Matteo smirked in mockery. âA partisan?â
âWeâre part of a resistance movement.â Armando lowered his weapon slightly but remained at the ready.
âWe?â Matteo scanned the surrounding hills, checking for others.
âIâm alone.â Armando also glanced at the surrounding hills, and Ezio wondered if he was double-checking. âI didnât have time to gather anyone. I needed to act swiftly. But we are many. More are rallying to our cause every day. Weâre tired of the yoke of oppression set upon our shoulders by Mussolini and his thugs. Weâre tired of being Hitlerâs puppets.â
âItaly has never been stronger.â Matteo shook his head in disagreement. âWeâre on the path to rebuildingââ
âThe Roman Empire?â Armando mocked. âWe canât even feed our own people. When was the last time you had a decent meal? When was the last time you saw more than one vehicle on the road? For goodnessâ sake, our American relatives are sending postcards to us made out of copper because of the sanctions. Weâre losing our footing in Africa, Greece, and everywhere else that weâve sent our men to die.â
Ezio studied Armando in slight awe of his passion. He wouldâve never guessed as to the second lieutenantâs loyalties, and the disparities Armando was alluding to had, for the most part, become the new normal for Ezio.
âThese are temporary setbacks.â Matteo persisted in his delusion. âWe all need to make sacrifices.â
âYouâve been lied to.â Armando looked at Matteo with a measure of sympathy. âHitler is using Italy as a buffer to keep the south of Germany safe. As soon as weâre not a benefit to him, weâll be overrun. The Americans are already bombing us in the south. Soon weâll be defending Italy on two fronts, most of our soldiers still in Africa or Greece. We need to put an end to this.â
âYou canât let him join.â Mario shook his head.
âYouâre part of this resistance too?â Ezio frowned at Mario.
âIf youâll have me?â Mario looked over at Armando.
âOne recruit at a time.â Armando grew flustered.
âWhy canât we let him join?â Ezio asked Mario.
âYouâre joining?â Armando asked Ezio with hope in his voice.
